Justice Leaders Collaborative comes to life during the time of a global health pandemic and a national uprising against white supremacy in the United States. We believe that the “awakening” of a social justice consciousness is the first step toward a transformation in practice that leads to a more just society; the peacock feather’s eye is the “opening” we experience in the work we do, and in this moment in history.

Justice Leaders Collaborative provides the opportunity for participants to be broken opened and changed by what they learn in our social justice and anti-racism offerings. The peacock’s symbolism has deeper meaning for us as well:

showing the fullness of one’s true colors -- we seek to live and work authentically and encourage this from our participants
living with integrity -- we hold each other accountable to our “walk” matching our “talk”
staying ever watchful -- we believe social justice requires that we pay attention to both our internal journey and the external forces of injustice that uphold the status quo
delivering our material with compassion and patience -- we embrace empathy and understanding for those who are different from us, and we seek to “meet people where they are”
trusting one another to work from a place of love -- we carry with us the James Baldwin sense of love as “daring and quest and growth”

Legend tells us that the colorful peacock survives on a diet of poisonous plants, transforming suffering and pain into beauty. Ever seeking to be accountable to one another and to our communities, we heed the caution of the arrogant white peacock in order to approach our work with humility, curiosity, and courage.
